Manga Monday- The Ancient Magus’ Bride

The Ancient Magus’ Bride is a Japanese fantasy shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Kore Yamazaki. The series is published in Japan by Mag Garden in its Monthly Comic Garden magazine. The manga is licensed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.

Plot-

Hatori Chise is only 15, but she has lost far more than most. With neither family nor hope, it seems all doors are closed to her. But, a chance encounter began to turn the rusted wheels of fate. In her darkest hour, a mysterious magus appears before Chise, offering a chance she couldn’t turn down. This magus who seems closer to demon than human, will he bring her the light she desperately seeks, or drown her in ever deeper shadows?

Kore Yamazaki began publishing the series in Mag Garden’s Monthly Comic Blade magazine in November 2013. The magazine ceased publication on September 1, 2014, at which point the series was moved to the new Monthly Comic Garden magazine, while also continuing to be released on the Monthly Comic Blade website. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the series for publication in North America in October 2014.

A drama CD was bundled with the limited edition of the fifth volume, released in March 2016.

Film Friday- Peach Girl

Film Friday- Peach Girl

The series was adapted as a Taiwanese drama in 2002 and a Japanese animated television series in 2005. On mid-March of 2016, the live-action film adaptation was announced. The film was released in Japan on May 20, 2017. The animated TV series is distributed by Funimation Entertainment in North America.

Characters

Momo Adachi
The main character. Her given name means ‘peach’ in Japanese. She has tanned skin and light hair (derived from her constant swimming in chlorinated pools while on the swim team), mistakenly giving others the impression that she is a “beach bunny”, lover of the Ganguro style, or sexually promiscuous. On the contrary, Momo is a shy, insecure girl. She has loved Toji for many years, although later on she finds herself falling in love with Kairi. When she found out Toji disliked girls with tan skin, she started to avoid swimming pools and wore a lot of sunblock to get her skin to its original color (presumed to be fair). Later on, Momo finds out that Toji never said he disliked girls with tan skin. Her friend (Ryoko) from junior high had made that up because she had liked him too. She is often confused later on when she likes both Toji and Kairi at the same time, causing several disputes between the two boys.
Sae Kashiwagi
The main antagonist who does everything to ruin Momo’s life. Her fair features (pale skin, dark hair) serve as a contrast for Momo; her “innocent” appearance belies her scheming, mischievous, trouble making nature. She is the one who spreads malicious gossip about Momo; something Momo knows, but has trouble dealing with, as people are more apt to believe in Sae than the ‘airheaded ganguro girl’ to the point that Toji believed Sae over Momo (who was currently his girlfriend). She often uses the gossip to make people dislike Momo, as a result of her own jealousy and insecurity. She spreads rumors that she is dating Toji, and that Momo is trying to steal him from her when it is actually the other way around. She really is mean and doesn’t care for Momo and isn’t her “real” friend. All she wants is popularity in school, to humiliate Momo, and to get Toji all for herself. She will stop at nothing to complete this task. Later, she dates a male model named Jigoro and in the end exploits him to help break up Toji and Momo, the nastiest scheme she has ever plotted. She begins to repent after she falls in love with Ryo and understands the hurtful feeling that she caused Momo, when Ryo seemingly gets her pregnant (it later turns out to be a medical condition that simulates pregnancy) and subsequently abandons her.
Kairi Okayasu
A popular and carefree classmate of Momo’s. Sae goes after him after Momo lies that she likes him to protect her and Toji’s relationship, but he is the only boy to see straight through Sae for what she really is. He has the reputation of being a playboy, something he is not exactly proud of. He thought that Momo was the one who once gave him CPR when he had nearly drowned at the beach when they were younger; only to later find out he had been saved by the local male lifeguard. His interest in her is renewed when Sae spreads rumors about them being a couple; he adds to this by claiming he has kissed Momo. When Momo is upset by his rumor, he tries to make the rumor true by kissing her unexpectedly in the beginning of the series.
After the two start dating, his insecurities about relationships are revealed to stem from his unrequited love for Misao, the school nurse and Kairi’s former tutor. However, after he confesses and is shot down by her, he actually feels relieved and confident to pursue his relationship with Momo. He begins fighting over her with Toji and in the end they get back together.

The English-language manga uses the non standard romanization “Kiley Okayasu“. Other groups, such as FUNimation, Kodansha, and non-English language publishers, use “Kairi”.

Kazuya “Toji” Tojigamori

A boy who has been Momo’s crush since junior high school although she never then confessed to him due to a friend saying he “doesn’t like girls with tan skin”. He overhears Momo confess her love for him to Kairi and then eventually dates Momo but Sae wants him for herself. He has a good heart, but tends to be hard headed and oblivious to what is in front of him, believing what Sae says over what Momo says, much to the frustration of Momo. Sae later blackmails Toji into dating her using pictures of Momo and Jigoro in a hotel bed together. He then breaks up with Momo. After this Momo starts dating Kairi.

The Tokyopop manga renders his family name as “Toujikamori”.

Misao Aki

The school nurse and a big sister figure for Momo. Misao was once Kairi’s tutor and crush, and an old flame of Ryo’s. Although she dated and broke up with him, she still loves him.

Ryo Okayasu
Kairi’s older brother who works in the video game industry. He serves as a male counterpart to Sae, only he is significantly more dangerous. Ryo is in love with Misao, and dated her briefly, but Misao broke up with him because of his cold and manipulating attitude which is revealed when he smacks Sae after hurting Misao.
Sae meets him and quickly falls for him because of their obvious similarities, though Ryo barely takes the relationship seriously and treats Sae poorly. When Sae tells him she is pregnant with his child he gives her money. Ryo is quite touched by Sae when she tells him she wants to make a family with him that will love him. After they find out Sae had a false pregnancy, the two split. However, Ryo stills feels happy about what Sae told him, and seems to be interested in having kids.
Goro Ooji
He is called Jigoro (ジゴロー Jigorō) and is a male model who is smitten with Sae and unaware of her true personality. She uses him in her schemes against Momo.
Morika
A young woman who once dated both Okayasu brothers, Morika has a grudge against Ryo and tries to use Kairi against him. Morika hires some thugs to beat up Ryo as revenge for using her.

Manga Monday- Peach Girl

Manga Monday- Peach Girl

Peach Girl is a Japanese shōjo manga series by Miwa Ueda. A high school drama centered on character Momo Adachi, her love life, friendships and rivalries, it was published in Japan by Kodansha in Bessatsu Friend from 1998 to 2003 and collected in 18 volumes. A manga sequel set 10 years after the original manga, titled Peach Girl Next, began its serialization on Be Love on August 12, 2016.

The North American version of the manga is published in two parts by Tokyopop: Peach Girl, covering the first eight volumes of the Japanese release; and Peach Girl: Change of Heart, comprising the final ten books.

Plot-

Momo Adachi is a former member of the high school swim team. She tans easily and her hair is bleached out; unfortunately, she is stereotyped by her ignorant classmates and is forced to endure rumors about being an “easy girl” who has had many sexual relationships. Her only friend is Sae, who is actually responsible for spreading the nasty gossip due to her jealousy of Momo. Momo is in love with Toji, a taciturn baseball player, but the scheming Sae also has her sights set on the boy. Momo’s life is further complicated with the introduction of Kairi Okayasu, a wise-cracking playboy who is determined to make her his. He reveals to Momo that she had saved him from drowning the summer before high school started.

Things become even more complicated when Sae, in an attempt to make Momo miserable, spreads rumors about Momo and Kairi making out. The rumor about the kiss between the two is true, but it was Kairi who initiated it while Momo remained stunned by the interaction. When Toji is hospitalized, Sae convinces Toji to break up with Momo. Thanks to Kairi, he finds out about all the lies and rumors Sae has made up. Toji saves Momo from being bullied (thanks to Sae’s lies again) and tells the truth about him and Momo, resulting in the students apologizing to Momo and hating Sae. Toji and Momo get back together, but Sae later tries to complicate their relationship again by threatening to discredit Momo with her newly acquired access to the mass media. Though Toji is initially defiant, he reluctantly breaks up with Momo to protect her. Momo is heartbroken at first, particularly due to not knowing that it is part of Sae’s schemes. However, she eventually begins dating Kairi, whom she had previously considered annoying, and soon begins to fall in love with him. When it is revealed to Momo why Toji broke up with her, Momo is left to choose between Toji and Kairi. More problems arise and the love triangle intensifies.

In “Sae’s Story”, Sae is left back a year, for she was always skipping classes. She is too stubborn so she goes to Momo’s and Kairi’s university every day. Toji goes to a good university by himself. Sae then meets one of her childhood sweethearts, Kanji (or Monkey Boy), who left for Malaysia when they were young, and promised to marry Sae when he was back. In love with Sae, Kanji follows her around, trying to win her over. He takes care of Sae’s dog, Sora, when her parents would no longer let her keep it. The dog walks with a little limp; one day when Sora tried to follow Sae, she threw a rock at its paw and injured it. Sae starts modeling and pretends she goes to college with Momo, when she is really still in high school. She meets Honda and works for CC as a model. She meets a guy named Takuma, and he later turns her down. Sae meets another guy named Shinji but realizes he never really liked her. All these ups and downs make Sae realize that Momo, Kairi, and Kanji are the only people who care for her.

He is the wielder of the five-leaf clover grimoire and a member of the Black Bull squad. He uses an anti-magic sword that is capable of nullifying any form of magic called the Magic Cleaving Sword, and an anti-magic sword that is capable of absorbing and using other magic called the Magic Eating Sword. The Magic Eating sword was found in a dungeon and was not made by his Grimore, but it became part of it later, after Asta used it. According to the Witch Queen, Asta’s swords used to belong to the Elf Elder, a powerful mage who once nearly destroyed the world with the ancient demon that he conjured through forbidden magic. The anti-magic energy is constantly flowing through the swords, causing many people to be unable to wield the swords. However, since Asta was born without magic, he was unconsciously able to stop and start the flow of that power. After his arms were healed by the Witch Queen, the flow of the power has gone faster, resulting in Asta able to become the vessel to the force of anti-magic itself.
Yuno
Yuno is an orphan who was left under the care of a church during his infancy. He is the wielder of the four-leaf clover grimoire and a member of the Golden Dawn squad. He uses wind-based magics and the chosen partner of Sylph the wind of the 4 great attributes. When Yuno was being bullied, Asta jumped in, and fought them back. Yuno could only admire how Asta saved him, despite not having magic, and it made him feel ashamed and to make up, he trained himself to become his equal, in a moral sense.
Noelle Silva
Voiced by: Yuki Kana
Noelle Silva is a member of the Black Bull squad and the second daughter of the Clover Kingdom’s royal family, House Silva. She uses water-based magics but is unable to control it, which led to her disownment by her family. To cope with her uncontrollable magic, she uses an item to adjust her magic. It is later revealed that she unconsciously wishes to not hurt anyone, which is why her magic always misses, but she has begun to breakdown that barrier for the sake of protecting her friends.

Manga Monday- Black Clover

Manga Monday- Black Clover

Black Clover is a Japanese fantasy shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Yūki Tabata. The series is published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine in Japan, and Viz Media is publishing it in their Weekly Shonen Jump digital anthology magazine in the United States. The story centers around a young boy named Asta, seemingly born without any magic power, something that is unknown in the world he lives in. With his ambition, newfound abilities, and friends, he aims to be the Wizard king.

Yūki Tabata launched Black Clover in the twelfth issue of Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump on February 16, 2015. The manga is Tabata’s second series in Weekly Shōnen Jump: his first series, Hungry Joker, was launched in the magazine on November 12, 2012, where it ran for 24 chapters before being cancelled in 2013.

On February 9, 2015, Viz Media announced that they would publish the first three chapters of the series in their Weekly Shonen Jump digital magazine as part of their “Jump Start” program. On March 30, 2015, they announced that the series would join their weekly lineup, beginning with chapter 4 on April 6, and publishing at an accelerated rate until the chapters were current with Japan. Plans to release the series in print were announced in during their panel at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2015.

Plot

Asta and Yuno are orphans who were raised together from birth after being abandoned at a church orphanage on the outskirts of the Clover Kingdom at the same time. In a world where everyone has the natural ability to perform a kind of magic, or a Magical Power, Asta is the only person born without any, leading him to train physically as compensation. Conversely, Yuno was born as a prodigy with immense magical power and the talent to control it. When they are 15, Asta and Yuno are granted the ability to become wizards known as Magic Knights by receiving grimoires, with which all magical power is channeled. Yuno is granted a wind-based grimoire held by the kingdom’s first Wizard King, while Asta does not receive one. However, when a thief incapacitates Yuno to try and sell his grimoire on the black market, Asta summons his own grimoire, which contains the rare and mysterious Anti-Magic (enabling him to cancel out all magical effects), to defeat him. The story then follows the two boys in their time within separate squads in the Magic Knights, as they build a friendly rivalry to try and become the Wizard King themselves.

Other Characters

Ik-Soo
He is a clumsy High Priest of the Kouka Kingdom and was Yoon’s guardian. He spends his days in isolation praying to the gods for guidance and for the happiness of the people. He reveals a prophecy to Yona that marks the start of her search for the Four Dragon Warriors.
Lee Geun-Tae
He is the general of the Earth Tribe and the husband of Yun-Ho. He serves under Soo-Won’s rule after acknowledging Soo-Won’s strength during the Battle Game Festival held in Chishin. As a general who fought during Emperor Joo-Nam’s era (Yona and Soo-Won’s grandfather), he is a warrior dedicated to the battlefield and has been eager to fight on the front lines again. His tribe admires him, though he insists on them treating him like an ordinary citizen.
Son Mundok
He is the former General and leader of the Wind Tribe. He is the adoptive grandfather of Hak. Before his retirement, he was known as a general whose strength was compared to General Yu-Hon’s. Despite his strict behavior and appearance, Mundok cares for everyone who lives within the Wind Tribe and the royal family, whom he showed deep loyalty to. He has a kind heart and adopted two orphans as his grandchildren: Hak and Tae-Yeon.
Kan Tae-Jun
Tae-Jun is the second son of the Fire Tribe General Kan Soo-Jin. He was determined to make Yona his wife in order to inherit the throne of the Kouka Kingdom, though it is revealed that he has genuine feelings for her. Because of Hak intervening in his brash attempts to court Yona for years, he harbours a vendetta against Hak and actively tries to have him killed after Hak and Yona had escaped the castle. During his pursuit, he inadvertently caused both of them to fall from cliff, leading Tae-Jun to believe that he had killed Yona. This left Tae-Jun heavily depressed and guilty over the ordeal for months. He is finally reunited with Yona when his brother assigned him to capture bandits said to be driving off Fire Tribe soldiers from collecting taxes–which was really Yona and her group defending the poor from being abused by the military. Through his feelings for Yona, Tae-Jun fully repented his actions and resolves to change the lives of Fire Tribe people, earning him respect from his subordinates and Yona herself. He later remains a valuable ally to Yona and her group from that point onward, even agreeing to risk treason at her request.
Ahn Lili
Lili is the only daughter of Water Tribe General Ahn Joon-Gi. She is a confident, spunky girl around Yona’s age with big ambitions to help solve the overwhelming drug problems that plague the Water Tribe. However, her efforts are impaired by her overly-protective father with whom she shares a distant, if strained relationship. She initially thought that Yona and her group were suspicious, and thus involved in the drug trade. However, upon shadowing them for a few hours and being saved by them when attacked by a drug addict, she comes to realize that they too are trying to achieve a similar goal to herself. With the combined efforts of herself, Yona’s group, and an incognito Soo-Won, they are successfully able to arrest the reigning drug lord in the Water Tribe. Lili, Yona’s group team up once again after this to fully quell the Water Tribe’s drug and slave trade in Kai (a neighbouring nation), resulting in Lili and Yona being kidnapped by the enemy and sold as slaves in retribution for their drug-ban efforts. They eventually break out from the slave camp, but Lili is caught once again and sent to be hung. She is rescued in the knick of time by Lili’s personal guards, Yona’s group and added aid from Soo-Won’s and Joon-Gi’s forces–mostly notably, a joint effort between Hak and Soo-Won. Her near-death experience and her anti-drug trade efforts resulted in Lili gaining a very strong respect from the people of the Water Tribe.
From that point onward, Lili becomes a common ally between Yona and Soo-Won. She boasts a close friendship and loyalty to Yona, but a blooming friendship with Soo-Won, along with a deep gratitude for his role in her rescue. She is one of the few characters outside of Yona’s companions who, not knowing her before her father’s death, is privy to Yona’s true identity as the true heir to the Kouka throne. She is also the only confidents of Soo-Won, and is considered a valid marriage option for him by her father and some of the other generals of Kouka. She is a neutral party on the conflict between Soo-Won and Yona, but has publicly announced her friendship and loyalty to Yona to thousands of Sky Tribe and Water Tribe troops.
