Manga Monday- Skip Beat!

Manga Monday- Skip Beat!

Skip Beat! is a Japanese shōjo manga by Yoshiki Nakamura. It is the story of Kyoko Mogami, a 16-year-old girl who discovers that her childhood friend and romantic goal, Sho Fuwa, only keeps her around to act as a maid and to earn his living expenses, while he works his way to become the top pop idol in Japan. Furious and heartbroken, she vows revenge by beating him in show business.

In Japan, the manga was first published in Hakusensha’s shōjo manga magazine Hana to Yume in February 2002, while in the United States, it began publishing under Viz Media’s Shojo Beat label in 2006. Thirty-eight volumes and one fanbook have been released in Japan, and thirty-three of the volumes have been released in the United States.

This is another one of those shōjo series that bucks the tropes and makes it great. The little blurb at the top just gives the outline for the first episode. It does not touch the real story. In the beginning Kyoko is doing everything for revenge, when Sho breaks her heart he unlocks Pandora’s box in Kyoko, but over the course of the story she discovers more about herself. The real story is about Kyoko discovering who she is and that she is good enough to be a star. And it is does not talk about Ren Tsuruga, who is the real love interest for Kyoko. Of course they have a secret history that Kyoko does not remember for reasons. The manga is on-going in Japan but the quality has just gotten better over the series. With great character growth, a slow-burn of a love story, and sweet revenge there is something for everyone to love about Skip Beat!
