Demon Slayer is a Japanese manga series by Koyoharu Gotōge. The series is published in English by Viz Media. An anime television series adaptation by Ufotable premiered on April 6, 2019.
Koyoharu Gotōge launched the manga in 2016’s 11th issue of Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump on February 15, 2016. A side story for the manga was published in the first issue of Shonen Jump GIGA on July 20, 2016.
Viz Media published the first three chapters of the series in its digital magazine Weekly Shonen Jump as part of the “Jump Start” program, but did not pick the series up for continued serialization. Viz announced their license to the series during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20, 2017.
The series ranked 14th on a list of manga recommended by Japanese bookstore employees in 2017, and 19th on a list of the top manga of 2018 for male readers put together by Kono Manga ga Sugoi!. As of June 4, 2018, the series had 2.5 million copies in print worldwide.
Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted, intelligent boy who lives with his family and makes money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident, though Nezuko is now a demon, but surprisingly still shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again, and to avenge the loss of his family.
